Lately, tungsten rings are getting a lot of attention and are being considered the future of jewelry metal. A lot of people are picking tungsten carbide over the traditional metals, for example, gold or platinum. Buying a tungsten wedding band for your fianc comes with some problems that a lot of people don’t know about, and the manufacturers try not to disclose these issues to their buyers.
Makers of tungsten rings will claim that the rings are indestructible and that they won’t scratch easily. This isn’t entirely true, specifically when the rings use cobalt as the binder. Cheaper than nickel, cobalt binders can cause a serious skin reaction. A ring that uses cobalt in the binder might leave ugly sores and painful rashes on your ring finger.
A lot of companies say that tungsten carbide as the metal of the future, because of its durability and strength. It’s supposed to have the durability of a diamond, and the luster of gold or silver, but many couples who buy tungsten as either a gift, or a present find out that they really are not as durable as most people would have you think. Anything can break, and couples that have bought a tungsten wedding band for their significant other have seen them fall off their ring fingers, to be never found again, or have shattered into several pieces.
Although there are a lot of inaccuracies when it comes to tungsten and some unanswered questions, it is obvious that tungsten rings are definitely not the so-called “jewelry metal of the future”. They are simply a fad that will soon be a distant memory, similar to the Italian charms or nameplates that had disappeared from the fashion world. Buying something as precious as a wedding band needs to be taken seriously and buyers should not be convinced just because something claims to be indestructable.
Another problem with tungsten jewelry is because of their so called “sturdiness” that they’re ridiculously hard to adjust to finger size. If someone gains weight, the ring could potentially cut off circulation to the finger causing real damage. If someone loses too much weight the ring could fall off into a sewer, or drain, never to be seen again. Think carefully before purchasing tungsten rings, or jewelry, you might regret it eventually.
